The story behind Goji Berries
The Goji Berry has been respected for thousand's of years for it's amazing health properties in Chinese & Tebetian cultures where it is grown. It hasn't been since recently, though, that the rest of the world has even heard about the Goji Berry. It is enshrined as an important food and tonic by the people living in this area. They have been growing this herb for hundreds of years on the Ningxia flood plain between the Tibetan Plateau and Inner Mongolia. Water derived from the Himalayas flows down the Yellow River and across the Ningxia plains, carrying with it an assortment of minerals and organic nutrients. The goji bush blooms between April and October and is harvested from June to October depending on the weather and growing areas. When ready to harvest, the fruit turns to bright red, is nearly obling in shape and quite plump. Fullness in shape, brightness of colour and sweetness demonstrate the best quality of fruit. When picked from the bush and eaten, the berry should be very juicy and sweet to taste. Once picked, the berries are sun-dried over 5 days and then sorted by quality according to size prior to packing. Farmers believe that temperature extremes combined with the mineral rich alkaline soils are contributing factors for why the berry is so highly nutritous.
The fresh ripe Goji Berry has soft skin flesh and seeds which literally melt in your mouth when eaten. The people of the Ningxia region are strong and fit especially elderly people. As goji berries became a significant part of their diet it keeps them fit and away from doctors in their whole life. They consume goji tea and goji wine every day. The Hui people of Ningxia Antonomous Region have an outstanding number of centenarians (people who live past 100). In one village of 4,000 residents, 16 people are over 100 years. Could the daily cup of goji tea be a reason for this?

Select examples given below are for 100 grams of dried berries.
Calcium. Wolfberries contain 112 mg per 100 gram serving, providing about 8-10% of the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI).
Potassium. Wolfberries contain 1,132 mg per 100 grams dried fruit, giving about 24% of the DRI.
Iron. Wolfberries have 9 mg iron per 100 grams (100% DRI).
Zinc. 2 mg per 100 grams dried fruit (18% DRI).
Selenium. 100 grams of dried wolfberries contain 50 micrograms (91% DRI)
Riboflavin (vitamin B2). At 1.3 mg, 100 grams of dried wolfberries provide 100% of DRI.
Vitamin C. Vitamin C content in dried wolfberries has a wide range (from different sources) from 29 mg per 100 grams to as high as 148 mg per 100 grams (respectively, 32% and 163% DRI).
Wolfberries also contain numerous phytochemicals for which there are no established DRI values. Examples:
Beta-carotene. 7 mg per 100 grams dried fruit.
Zeaxanthin. Reported values for zeaxanthin content in dried wolfberries vary considerably, from 2.4 mg per 100 grams to 82.4 mg per 100 grams to 200 mg per 100 grams. The higher values would make wolfberry one of the richest edible plant sources known for zeaxanthin content. Up to 77% of total carotenoids present in wolfberry exist as zeaxanthin.
Polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are a major constituent of wolfberries, representing up to 31% of pulp weight.
Comparing antioxidant power
Sun-dried goji berries contain more antioxidants than any other food tested on the ORAC scale. Scientists at Tufts University have developed a scale for the U.S. Department of Agriculture called the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) test. The higher the ORAC score, the more capable that particular food is of destroying free radicals, thus retarding the aging process and other diseases. Here are the scores of some of the highest rated antioxidant foods:
The Goji Berry was found to have the highest ORAC-value of all fruits. By consuming 25-50 grams of Goji Berries daily you will consume enough ORAC-units to help your body fight against diseases like cancer or heart disease.

They make a great snack. Children really love them! You can eat them by themselves or mix them with other foods such as sultanas, brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, pecans or almonds. They make a good 'scrog' or 'trail mix’. They can also be used in salads, on top of hot or cold cereal, in stews, baked goods (cakes & biscuits), batter (pikelet / pancake mixes), etc.
To prepare a simple tea, steep 10-20 berries in boiled water. Add honey or lemon as desired.
They are yummy if ground together with almonds (and / or other nuts) and make a great ‘topping’ added to ice-cream, yoghurt or cream - best done with refrigerated gojis so that the soft berries don’t stick to the blades. Soaking overnight in yoghurt makes the gojis soft and very palatable – very much like eating fresh Goji Berries.
